Grey Squirrel

The most common pest squirrel in the UK, primarily found in lofts, attics, and roof spaces. Grey squirrels can cause damage by gnawing on wood, wires, and insulation.

How we deal with Squirrels

Grey squirrels can cause some serious damage in your home or business. Grey squirrels in the UK are classed as an invasive species as they were first introduced into the UK in 1876. They’ve driven out our native red squirrel to a point whereby only certain parts of the country have the red squirrel now.

Grey squirrels can be quite aggressive, and their sheer muscle power is incredible. It’s illegal in the UK to release a grey squirrel once captured. Due to this legislation, we only use instant kill traps for grey squirrels. The traps have been specially developed for squirrel use only and are extremely humane. It’s no longer legal to use anticoagulant against grey squirrels.

DIY Pest Control

If you’re considering catching the squirrel/s by yourself then please bear in mind that if you use a cage to trap the squirrel then you’ll need to check on that cage every few hours even through the night as it’s unacceptable to allow an animal to be left in distress, hence why we use instant kill traps.

Please don’t buy a cheap trap online in the hope that it will kill the squirrel in one blow. What’s likely to happen is that you’ll receive a rat trap that’s unlikely to kill a rat, let alone a squirrel. You will most likely have a squirrel running around your loft with a weak rat trap stuck to its head in the trap trying to remove it in distress. Imagine climbing into your loft space trying to deal with that scenario, because we have.

If you catch a squirrel in a live cage trap you then must dispatch the animal humanely. Drowning in a pond or water butt is not humane and is a criminal offence. The only humane method would be to shoot the squirrel in the trap. Be careful when carrying the trap outside if you’ve caught it in your loft. Squirrels are extremely powerful and biting your fingers would be extremely painful.
