Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles are small but highly destructive pests that can cause serious damage to your home or business. These pests feed on natural fibres like wool, silk, and cotton, making carpets, clothing, furniture, and even stored fabrics prime targets for infestation. If you suspect a carpet beetle problem, it’s important to act fast before the damage worsens.

Common Carpet Beetle

The most common species found in UK homes. It has a mottled appearance with brown, white, and yellow scales and is often found in dark, undisturbed areas.

Furnishing Carpet Beetle

Similar to the common carpet beetle, but with a more yellowish or orange hue. It’s often found in homes and can damage fabrics and carpets.

Black Carpet Beetle

A larger, black beetle that damages natural fibres like wool, silk, and feathers. Early detection is key to preventing damage.

How we deal with Carpet Beetles

The adult moth and carpet beetle do not cause the damage to your carpets and clothing. It’s the larvae of both species that are responsible for this. Carpet beetle larvae love to crawl below bookcases, drawer cabinets and basically any type of furniture that they feel will provide security to feed undisturbed. It’s only when you come to move that piece of furniture and see that the carpet is threadbare. They also chew holes in your clothing.

Moth larvae are also textile hungry, but they’re a little more confident and will happily chew away in exposed areas. They look like small grains of white rice or rolled up tissue paper.

We remove these pests using a long-lasting residual insecticide which can remain active in the carpets for up to nine months. We can also use ULV Ultra Low Volume fumigation to penetrate wardrobes and drawers.

DIY Pest Control

We would mostly recommend that you employ the services of a professional pest control company, however, if you wanted to try and remove these creatures from your house, we suggest that you wash all clothing on a minimum temperature of 45 degrees. These pests will target natural fibres only and not man made. You could also use Diatomaceous Earth powder on your carpets. Use sparingly and brush it in. leave it an hour and then vacuum. Please ensure that you wear the appropriate PPE as although this product is not an insecticide, it is Silica and can be an irritant to your airway and affect breathing. Do not use any insecticide powder or liquid in your house.
