How we deal with Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are by far the most stubborn pest anyone can have in their house. As you can see, we offer two levels of service when it comes to bed bugs & whilst we appreciate the triple treatment doesn’t suit everyone’s budget, it is the recommended treatment for bed bugs.

We use a number of different methods for control within the triple treatment which is described below.

Residual Insecticide

Bed bugs have already developed resistance against several different insecticides which is why its imperative to use a product that the bed bug is not resistant to. It’s also important to use a water based or oil-based insecticide at the right time because if you use one before the other, you’ll drive the bed bugs deeper into the fabric of your house or premises.

It’s also important that the product contains an ‘insect growth regulator’ (IGR). This is an additive to certain insecticides and works by keeping the insect in a juvenile state, so it can never reach sexual maturity to breed. This disrupts the lifecycle of the insect and stops breeding effectively.

The insecticides we use have what we call residual value. This means that the product will continue to work anywhere from two weeks to nine months depending on which product we use at the time and the type of flooring its being applied to.

Ultra low Volume (ULV)

ULV is a product that has been designed to be emitted using a machine called an Exodus. It’s been used on commercial aircraft for a number of years and some pest control companies also use it in domestic properties & commercial. It can also be used on public transport such as buses and trains.

It works by emitting airborne droplets between 5-30 microns. This enables the insecticide to penetrate inaccessible areas in loft spaces and behind furniture. It’s ideal for bed bugs as part of the triple treatment to compliment the other two applications. Unlike the residual insecticide, ULV has no lasting effects. After a few hours it has completely settled into tiny cracks and crevices and done its job killing all insects in meets.

Cimex Eradicator (Thermal Shock)

As part of the triple treatment, the Cimex Eradicator was designed in Italy against the increasing surge in bed bugs. It works by emitting a drier steam than a kettle and a steam which will have a temperature of 180 deg. This causes thermal shock to the bed bug and its eggs. It’s ideal for sensitive areas such as mattresses, pillows, headboards, bed frames, curtains, drawers, wardrobes and suitcases to name a few.

DIY Pest Control

Tackling a bed bug infestation is a difficult, if not an impossible task with off the shelf products you can buy online. We’ve been to properties and seen carpets smothered in ant powder in children’s bedrooms where people have tried to deal with the problem themselves. Some of the DIY treatments we’ve seen are not only dangerous, but futile making the problem a great deal worse. Please don’t use any insecticide in your house that you’ve bought online. Not only will it be unsuitable, but you could also be exposing yourself and your family with harmful chemicals without knowing. This applies to aerosols as well as sprays/smokes etc.

Make sure when you speak to a pest control company that they tell you which product they’ll be using and the process. It’s very important that the insecticide used has the IGR and is the correct mix ratios for your level of infestation. Make sure you ask questions and if you have any doubts then call a different company.
